Abrasive Wheels - £60.00pp

This Abrasive Wheels training course provides essential knowledge and practical guidance for the safe selection, mounting, and use of abrasive wheels, cutting discs, and grinding equipment in line with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).

The course is designed to raise awareness of the hazards associated with abrasive wheel use and to promote safe working practices, helping to reduce the risk of accidents and injury in the workplace.


Delegates will gain the skills and knowledge required to safely handle, inspect, and operate abrasive wheel equipment in compliance with current legislation and industry best practices.


Course Aim

To provide operatives with the knowledge and practical understanding required to safely select, mount, use, and inspect abrasive wheels and associated equipment, reducing the risk of injury and supporting compliance with PUWER 1998.

This course is suitable for any employee required to use abrasive wheels, cutting discs, or grinding equipment as part of their job role, including those in construction, manufacturing, fabrication, maintenance, and engineering environments.


  

Learning Outcomes

 

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  

  • Understand the key requirements of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) relating to abrasive wheels.
  • Identify different types of abrasive wheels, cutting discs, and grinding equipment and their specific applications.
  • Select the appropriate wheel or disc for the task, taking into account material, machine compatibility, and manufacturer guidance.
  • Carry out safe mounting and balancing of abrasive wheels, ensuring correct fitting and the use of appropriate locking devices.
  • Perform thorough pre-use inspections of equipment, identifying defects, damage, or wear that could lead to equipment failure.
  • Understand the hazards associated with abrasive wheel use, including wheel burst, entanglement, noise, dust, and flying debris.
  • Apply suitable control measures to reduce risks, including safe working distances, guarding, and operational checks.
  • Recognise the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including eye, face, hand, and respiratory protection when using abrasive wheel equipment.
  • Conduct basic risk assessments when setting up and using abrasive wheel machinery.
  • Follow correct procedures for handling, transporting, and storing abrasive wheels safely.
