Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a Traffic Marshal (Banksman) in controlling and guiding vehicle movements safely on-site.
  • Recognise common hazards associated with workplace transport and site traffic management, including restricted visibility, pedestrian routes, and reversing vehicles.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of standard hand signals and verbal/non-verbal communication techniques when directing drivers.
  • Understand safe working practices for traffic management, including:
  • Identifying safe areas and exclusion zones.
  • Maintaining visual contact with drivers.
  • Controlling entry and exit points on site.
  • Carry out basic site-specific risk assessments to identify hazards and implement control measures.
  • Understand the importance of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when acting as a Traffic Marshal, including high-visibility clothing and suitable footwear.
  • Promote the safe movement of vehicles and protect pedestrians and site operatives within the working area.
  • Understand the legal obligations relating to site safety and workplace transport, including the employer’s and employee’s responsibilities.
      

Duration: Half Day

Certification: Successful candidates receive a certificate, valid for three years.
