Lead Awareness

This course provides essential awareness training for employees who may work in environments where there is a risk of exposure to lead. It covers the dangers of lead exposure, how to recognise potential sources, and the control measures required to reduce risk in line with the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002.

Delegates will gain a clear understanding of the health implications of lead exposure, safe working practices, and their responsibilities in maintaining a safe working environment.

Course Aim

To provide delegates with the knowledge to identify potential lead hazards in the workplace, understand the health risks associated with exposure, and apply appropriate control measures to protect themselves and others.

Who Should Attend?

Any employee who may come into contact with lead during their work activities, including those working in construction, refurbishment, maintenance, demolition, painting, or environments where old lead-based materials may be present.

  

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand what lead is, where it may be found, and the potential sources of exposure within the workplace.
  • Identify the short-term and long-term health risks associated with lead exposure, including the effects on the respiratory system, kidneys, and nervous system.
  • Recognise the symptoms of lead poisoning and the importance of early intervention.
  • Understand employer and employee legal duties under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002.
  • Apply appropriate control measures including:
  • Safe working procedures to minimise dust generation and exposure.
  • Selection, use, and maintenance of suitable PPE and RPE.
  • Good hygiene practices to prevent ingestion or inhalation of lead dust.
  • Understand the importance of health surveillance, medical monitoring, and record-keeping for workers exposed to lead.
  • Follow correct procedures for cleaning, decontamination, and disposal of lead-contaminated materials.

Certification: Successful candidates receive a certificate, valid for three years
