This Legionella Awareness Training course provides essential knowledge for those responsible for managing water systems within buildings, helping to prevent the risk of Legionella bacteria developing and causing serious illness such as Legionnaires’ Disease.

The course provides an overview of the conditions that promote the growth of Legionella, the potential sources of contamination, and the preventative control measures required to manage water systems safely and in compliance with current legislation. Delegates will gain a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities under the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) L8 and HSG274 guidance, helping them to implement safe systems of work and support public health within their premises.

Course Aim

To provide delegates with an understanding of Legionella bacteria, associated health risks, and practical control measures to prevent exposure, supporting compliance with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) and ACoP L8.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand what Legionella bacteria are, how it develops, and the health risks associated with exposure, including symptoms and outcomes of Legionnaires’ Disease.
  • Identify typical environments and water systems where Legionella growth is most likely to occur, including hot and cold water systems, cooling towers, showers, taps, and air conditioning units.
  • Understand the legal responsibilities of duty holders, landlords, facilities managers, and responsible persons under ACoP L8 and HSG274.
  • Recognise the key requirements of a Legionella risk assessment and the importance of reviewing it regularly.
  • Understand control measures to reduce the risk of Legionella, including temperature control, system flushing, cleaning and disinfection procedures, and the safe management of dead-legs or infrequently used outlets.
  • Understand the importance of regular monitoring, inspection, and maintenance of water systems.
  • Recognise the need for accurate record-keeping and documentation to demonstrate compliance with health and safety requirements.
