This one-day CITB Health and Safety Awareness course provides an essential introduction to health and safety for people working, or preparing to work, within the construction industry.

The course helps delegates understand the hazards they may encounter, their individual responsibilities and the practical steps required to protect themselves and others while working on site.

It can also support an application for a CSCS Labourer Card when combined with the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and other applicable CSCS requirements.

Course Aim

To provide delegates with a practical understanding of construction site hazards, safe working practices and their responsibilities for contributing to a safe and healthy workplace.

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for:

  • New entrants to the construction industry.
  • Construction labourers and operatives.
  • Employees requiring a foundation-level understanding of site safety.
  • Individuals seeking an appropriate qualification to support a CSCS Labourer Card application.
  • No formal entry requirements apply, and the course is suitable for delegates of all ability levels.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand their individual health and safety responsibilities.
  • Explain the responsibilities of employers and other duty holders.
  • Recognise common construction site hazards.
  • Understand the importance of risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Follow site rules, inductions and emergency procedures.
  • Understand appropriate controls for:
    • Working at height.
    • Manual handling.
    • Plant and equipment.
    • Electricity
    • Excavations and confined spaces.
    • Noise, vibration and hazardous substances.
    • Fire and emergency arrangements.
  • Select and use personal protective equipment appropriately.
  • Recognise unsafe conditions and report concerns.
  • Understand the importance of occupational health and welfare.
  • Contribute positively to health and safety on site.  
Duration: One day 
Assessment: Delegates must participate throughout the course and successfully complete the end-of-course examination.
Certification: Successful delegates will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness certificate, valid for five years.
